I don't believe one can be trained to write a novel. For me, the learning has been unstructured and ongoing.

How long does it really take?

In a discussion with the host of a reading and performance group next to a fire under northeast Minneapolis's autumn stars, I learned that in a survey of science fiction writers, the average duration of time from start to publication of a debut novel was ten years.
